Healers Help Us Heal Ourselves

No one can do the work for us. No one has all the answers and in fact, when we look to others instead of within for truth, we give our power away. No healer, teacher or therapist can “fix” us. Those who play these sacred roles for us are simply space holders, helping us learn how to witness, know and heal ourselves more deeply.

I am so grateful for these people in my own life. I wouldn’t be where or who I am without the safe space of a therapy room, without the tools and support from my own teachers, mentors and healers. And yet, doing the work always was and always will be up to me. All these beautiful people were simply holding a space for me to return to myself.

I’m a big believer in asking for help. I’m a big believer in the transformative power of being witnessed. And I believe that the right person at the right time can make a life-changing impact.

They can help us see what we have been blind to. They can help us name what we haven’t been able to find words for. They can help us feel what we’ve been suppressing. They can help us remember what we conveniently forget. They can keep us accountable when we step off our path. They can mirror and validate and reflect. They can help us find clarity, confidence and courage for our journeys.

But they can’t change what is. Can’t change the moment that led us to this wound. Can’t restore what has crumbled or been lost in our lives. They can simply help us as we rebuild.

And what a beautiful thing to witness someone bravely excavate, renovate and rebuild their life. What an honor. We remember at the end of the day that the work – the painful dismantling and the gorgeous restructuring – is ours to own. That owning our lives is the most important thing we can do. And that ultimately, we are on a journey of returning home, to ourselves, again and again along the way.
